Mica & Effect Materials for Ceramics
Mica and Effect Materials for Distinctive Ceramic Surfaces
Mica and other effect materials can be used to accent ceramic work and add visual interest to the surface. Depending on the product, the effect may be subtly shimmering or much more pronounced. Always coordinate the material and application with the clay, glaze and intended firing.
Test Effects Before the Final Piece
– follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and firing range
– try small amounts on test tiles first
– test combinations with glazes before using them on a larger series
– for functional ware, check the product's specific suitability
Because mica and effect products can react very differently, test pieces are especially useful. They show you how color, sheen and surface develop under your own firing conditions before you commit to the final piece.
If you only want a localized mica effect, start with a small amount and increase it gradually. This makes the result easier to control. Effects may also appear differently on textured surfaces than on smooth test tiles.
